Caribbean connection

Casa de Mono holds a special place in Cohli's story. Originally hosted as Nomad Nest x Casa de Mono, this was one of the experiences that helped shape what Cohli is today. Bocas del Toro is a place where time moves differently - where a day spent in turquoise water, listening to the rhythm of the Caribbean, teaches you what matters most.

Casa de Mono is more than a rental. It's a beautifully built colonial-style villa on Isla Colón, surrounded by garden, nestled into the nature of the Caribbean. The locals here value community deeply. Kids learn to swim before they walk. Parents find the kind of slowness that resets something inside.

What we love about this place is the authenticity. It's not overdeveloped. The snorkeling is world-class. The food is fresh. The people are warm. Families who came here in 2025 experienced something real. Not a packaged resort experience, but actual Caribbean island life, lived alongside one another.

Living with other families in close quarters in a tropical climate isn't always easy. Some days are very hot. Some kids need more space. Some parents miss strong WiFi. But these are the moments where real connection happens. Where your kids make friends they'll talk about for years. Where you and other parents discover you're not alone in this way of raising children.

Casa de Mono is part of Cohli's history now. A reminder that this work - bringing families together in real places - began with a simple belief: that there's another way to live as a family.

With island gratitude,

The local community values connection deeply - a place where families become neighbors and children grow up together.

Each family has their own space with private bathroom and kitchen access. Outdoor dining areas and shared communal spaces for gathering. The villa is designed for both privacy and community living.

The Surroundings

What island time feels like

There's a rhythm to Caribbean island living. Days flow around water, weather, and the natural pace of the place. Here's what a typical day might look like.

7:00 AM

Early Light

Wake to warmth and birdsong. Coffee on your porch. The ocean is calm in the early morning. Some families head to town for breakfast at a local restaurant. Others prepare their own.

8:30 AM

Learning or School

Kids head to one of the local schools for Spanish lessons, cultural learning, or alternative curriculum. Or families do their own worldschooling - nature journaling, marine biology by the reef, Spanish conversation.

11:00 AM

Water Time

The heat brings everyone to the water. Snorkeling the coral reef, swimming off the dock, surfing if the waves are right. Kids play in the shallows. Parents read on the beach or join the water.

1:00 PM

Lunch & Heat Rest

The hottest part of the day. Lunch made by the local cook or prepared in the villa kitchen. Younger kids nap. Older ones play in the shade or read. Parents have quiet time or work.

3:00 PM

Exploration or Adventure

A boat trip to neighboring islands. Exploring town on bicycles. Visiting a local shop or market. The archipelago is yours to discover. Some families work during this time. There's space for all rhythms.

5:00 PM

Golden Hour

The light shifts. Cooler breeze. Kids play while the sun moves lower. Adults gather on the villa's outdoor spaces - conversation, laughter, the smell of dinner being prepared.

7:00 PM

Dinner & Connection

Meals happen together - either family-cooked or prepared by the local cook. Shared dinners on the terrace. Kids play as the sun sets. Conversations that meander. Stars that multiply as the night deepens.

8:30 PM

Evening & Wind Down

Kids drift to bed, lulled by ocean sounds and warm breezes. Adults might linger over drinks, play cards, or simply sit in the night. The Caribbean rhythm doesn't hurry.

We've been traveling with our two kids, Maya and Koa, since 2022. Casa de Mono taught us so much about what families need to thrive in close quarters in tropical climates. The connections formed here - between families, with the local community, and with ourselves - are part of why Cohli exists.

Casa de Mono Team

Hosts & Local Community

The Casa de Mono team and the broader Bocas del Toro community welcomed our families with open arms. Their warmth, generosity, and commitment to authentic Caribbean living made this experience life-changing for everyone who came.

Practical tips for Caribbean island living

What to know if you're considering island time in the future.

🌡
Sun protection is essential. The Caribbean sun is intense (26-30°C year-round). Reef-safe sunscreen, hats, UV-protecting clothing, and sunglasses. Reapply often.
👞
Swimwear, fins, and water shoes. You'll live in the water. Pack multiple swimsuits, reef shoes for rocky areas, snorkel gear if you prefer your own, and rash guards for sun protection.
🔌
US adapter (Type A outlets). Panama uses 110V, US-style outlets. No special adapter needed if you're from the US. Others will need a converter.
📷
A camera for underwater moments. An action camera (GoPro, DJI) captures snorkeling and water play. Waterproof phone case is also smart.
📚
Lightweight, breathable clothing. Cotton and linen are your friends in tropical humidity. Avoid heavy fabrics. A light rain jacket for quick tropical showers.
💊
Insect repellent and mosquito net. Tropical insects are part of island life. Natural repellent with DEET, especially for dawn and dusk. Consider bringing a portable mosquito net for beds.
What families ask about Casa de Mono
Casa de Mono ran August-October 2025 and is now complete. We're not taking new bookings for this location. But this page shares what the experience was like - if you're interested in similar island-based family coliving, explore our current cohorts or show interest in future ones.
Bocas del Toro is warm and humid year-round (26-30°C). August-October is the green season with more rain, but it's beautiful and quiet. Days are typically sunny with afternoon showers. The warmth and humidity were part of the experience - a gentle pressure to slow down and embrace island time.
Exceptional. Bocas del Toro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the world's clearest Caribbean waters. Coral reefs are minutes away by boat or swim. The waters are calm and safe for families. Snorkeling, swimming, and water play were daily activities.
Three local day-schools were available for Spanish immersion and alternative curricula. Many families also did their own worldschooling - marine biology by the reef, Spanish conversation, nature journaling. The island itself was the classroom.
WiFi was available and stable at Casa de Mono. Not as fast as a major city, but adequate for video calls and remote work. Many families found that the island rhythm naturally reduced their need to work - but for those who needed to, it was doable.
